Formal attire for foxhunting is practical gear for riding a horse across terrain. The appropriate dress for our sport is traditional and has withstood the test of time.
Experienced foxhunters take as much pride in their equipment and attire as those who participate in other field sports. They also know that a well turned-out field is a compliment to the landowner.
The Tennessee Valley Hunt, years ago, adopted policy for appropriate attire. It is expected that experienced subscribers will follow protocol and assist new subscribers and guests in doing the same.
The Masters understand that new subscribers come to hunting from a variety of riding backgrounds. Therefore the dress policy is normally waived for guests or new subscribers riding in hilltoppers.
The formal season begins Opening Meet (this year, November 15th) and extends through Mid-March. All meets following Opening Meet are formal, including weekdays.
The custom of TVH has always been to adhere to the dress policy as closely as possible, however, keep in mind that the most important aspect of good turn-out could very well be that smile on your face and that plastic dinosaur in your pocket…
